During the peak of the Tong Wars, rival factions would hide around this corner to surprise their enemies, and the frequency of these attacks led law enforcement to label it the deadliest street intersection in the United States. The weapon of choice for these gang members was often a hatchet, which eventually gave rise to the term hatchet man.
