The Mudd Club was named after Samuel Alexander Mudd, the physician who famously treated John Wilkes Booth after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Steve Mass, one of the club's founders, chose the name to distance his venue from the polished, glitzy reputation of uptown spots like Studio 54. He wanted a name that felt grounded, gritty, and tied to the dark history of the country rather than the high-fashion world of the late nineteen seventies.
