Statue of Sun Yat-sen (New York City)

The statue of Sun Yat-sen in Columbus Park serves as a permanent anchor for the history of Chinese immigration in New York City. Sun Yat-sen himself was no stranger to this neighborhood, having visited Manhattan's Chinatown in 1911 to deliver a speech at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association as he gathered support for the revolution that would eventually end five thousand years of imperial rule in China. The sculpture, created by Taiwanese artist Lu Chun-Hsiung, depicts the revolutionary leader in a contemplative standing pose. It was originally installed in 2011, but the community spent eight years advocating for its permanent status, which was finally granted in 2019 when the surrounding plaza was officially renamed in his honor.
