Sol Lain Playground

Sol Lain Playground is named in memory of a local resident who spent his life organizing youth sports in this very neighborhood. During the nineteen sixties, Sol Lain coordinated basketball tournaments here that gained such a fierce reputation for skill and intensity that they occasionally rivaled the famous Rucker tournaments held in Harlem. When he died in nineteen seventy-one, the city passed a local law to rename what was then known as the Henry Street Playground in his honor, permanently linking the space to his legacy of community mentorship.
