Julia De Burgos Latino Cultural Center

The building that now serves as the Julia de Burgos Latino Cultural Center began its life in eighteen eighty-two as Public School seventy-two. It holds the distinction of being the first full-block school building constructed in New York City, designed to accommodate the rapidly growing immigrant population of East Harlem at the time. The structure is a preserved example of neo-Grec architecture, standing as a landmark of the neighborhood's long history of evolving communities.
