The building at one hundred forty Second Avenue began its life around eighteen thirty as a pair of elegant federal-style townhouses. While it appears as a singular, metal-clad structure today, its long history is visible if you look closely. You can still see a subtle seam down the middle of the facade where the two original houses were joined together. These early homes were built on land that was once part of the sprawling farm owned by Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch Director-General of New Netherland.
