The building housing the National Museum of the American Indian is itself a marvel of Beaux-Arts design, known as the Alexander Hamilton United States Custom House. When you stand before it, look closely at the limestone facade where four monumental statues sit on pedestals. These sculptures, titled The Four Continents, were created by Daniel Chester French, the same artist who sculpted the seated Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. They represent Asia, America, Europe, and Africa, each portrayed with allegorical symbols of their history and progress.
