Afropunk Festival

The Afropunk Festival began in two thousand five as a modest gathering at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, fueled by the DIY spirit of a two thousand three documentary of the same name. Filmmaker James Spooner and producer Matthew Morgan created the event to provide a physical home for Black fans and artists who felt alienated within the largely white-dominated punk rock scene. In those early years, the festival showcased a raw, underground aesthetic that stood in sharp contrast to mainstream music events, eventually moving its flagship stage into the historic Commodore Barry Park.
