American Radiator Building

historic

The American Radiator Building stands out for its bold, unconventional color scheme of black brick and gold trim. Architect Raymond Hood chose these specific materials to serve as a symbolic advertisement for the building's original occupant, the American Radiator Company. The black brick represents coal, the fuel source for the company's heating systems, while the gold accents evoke the fire and warmth generated by their products. When finished in 1924, this dramatic aesthetic transformed the structure into a literal, glowing centerpiece of the city at night, as it was one of the first skyscrapers to feature intentional, high-powered exterior floodlighting.
