Engineering Societies' Building

The Engineering Societies Building on West 39th Street was the headquarters for the American engineering industry during the early twentieth century. Steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie provided one and a half million dollars to fund its construction after he envisioned a unified home for the country's competing engineering organizations. When it opened in 1907, it became a central hub where the most influential minds in science and industry gathered. The building housed the primary offices, massive lecture rooms, and a renowned technical library that served as the backbone for the rapid industrial growth of New York City.
