The Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations transformed this area into the center of the world for sixteen months in the mid nineteenth century. It occupied a massive, purpose-built structure known as the New York Crystal Palace, which stood exactly where Bryant Park is located today. The palace served as the stage for America's first world's fair, a glittering monument of iron and glass designed to demonstrate the country's rising industrial and technological power. Its sprawling design and central dome were built to rival the architectural marvels of Europe, establishing New York as a rising global commercial hub.
