Macy's Herald Square

Macy's Herald Square occupies a massive footprint in Manhattan, but its internal layout tells the story of a long-standing property feud. When the store was originally constructed in the early twentieth century, a small five-story building occupied the corner of Thirty-Fourth Street and Broadway, right in the middle of where the owners wanted their store to be. The owners of that smaller building refused to sell, so the architects simply designed the department store around it. That holdout building became known as the Million Dollar Corner after it was finally sold for a record-breaking price in 1911, and it still stands today, carrying the Macy's sign by lease agreement.
