Beth Israel Medical Center

Beth Israel Medical Center was born from a grassroots effort in 1889, when a group of forty Orthodox Jewish immigrants on the Lower East Side each contributed twenty-five cents to create a hospital for their community. At that time, most local institutions turned away these Yiddish-speaking families, leaving them without adequate care in the overcrowded tenements. The name itself reflects this origin, as Beth Israel translates to House of Israel.
