Provincetown Playhouse

The Provincetown Playhouse occupies a site at one hundred thirty-three Macdougal Street that began its life in the nineteenth century as a humble stable and wine-bottling plant. In nineteen eighteen, a group of rebellious artists and intellectuals converted this industrial space into the permanent home for their experimental theater company. They were disillusioned by the commercialism of Broadway and sought to create a venue where they could stage provocative, avant-garde works that focused on honest storytelling rather than profit. This transition turned a simple building into what many consider the birthplace of modern American drama.
