The DiMenna Center for Classical Music

The DiMenna Center for Classical Music exists because New York City musicians once struggled to find professional, affordable spaces to practice. In 2004, the Orchestra of St. Luke's realized the city lacked acoustically optimized environments specifically for classical ensembles. They eventually transformed the lower half of an existing building on West 37th Street, which previously housed two off-Broadway theaters, into this specialized facility. To ensure perfect sound quality, the designers employed a box-in-a-box construction technique. Each individual rehearsal room acts as its own separate structure, floating on neoprene pads inside the larger concrete shell of the building. This design completely isolates the music from the noise of the city streets outside. Musicians now use these rooms for everything from solo practice sessions to recording full-scale orchestral works. The center operates as a vital resource for the entire classical community, serving as a permanent home for the Orchestra of St. Luke's while remaining accessible to hundreds of other artists every year.
