James Brown House (Manhattan)

The James Brown House was built in 1817 as a modest home and tobacco shop for an African American veteran of the Revolutionary War. When it was first constructed, the building stood only a few feet from the edge of the Hudson River. Two centuries of urban expansion and landfill have pushed the shoreline two blocks to the west, leaving this historic structure far inland from its original position on the water.
