The Shed (arts center)

The Shed is a rare example of kinetic architecture in New York City. The building features an eight-story fixed base that houses galleries and theater spaces, but its most striking element is a massive outer shell. This shell weighs eight million pounds and is clad in translucent polymer pillows. It rests on a set of steel wheels that allow it to travel along tracks, effectively doubling the building's footprint in about five minutes. When fully deployed over the adjoining plaza, the structure creates a vast, climate-controlled hall known as The McCourt, which provides a flexible space for large-scale performances and installations.
