The Samuel J. Friedman Theatre stands as a rare example of a Broadway house named not for a famous actor or theater mogul, but for a publicist. Samuel J. Friedman was a prominent press agent who helped shape the image of countless Broadway productions throughout his career. His legacy is permanently linked to this stage because his family provided a major donation to the Manhattan Theatre Club, the non-profit organization that now owns and operates the venue. Before it bore his name, the theater was known as the Biltmore, a name it held from its opening in 1925 until its renaming in 2008.
