East River Promenade

The East River Promenade serves as the eastern edge of Manhattan, tracing the shoreline where the city meets the river. It was first conceived in the nineteen thirties alongside the construction of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Drive. At the time, officials like Borough President Samuel Levy championed the project as a way to convert what was then a densely packed industrial waterfront into an open residential space. This effort marked one of the city's earliest attempts to reclaim its industrial edges for public recreation.
