The building you are approaching began its life as the Association Residence for the Home for Aged and Indigent Women. In the early twentieth century, this facility provided a rare form of social security for women who had worked in domestic service or teaching throughout their lives but lacked the means to support themselves in their later years. The architects crafted the structure with an expansive, institutional layout intended to foster a sense of community among residents who had otherwise lived solitary lives of labor.
