Mill Rock

park garden

Mill Rock is a small, quiet island in the East River, sitting about a thousand feet off the shore of East 96th Street. While it appears to be a natural part of the river today, its current form is the result of a massive engineering project from the late nineteenth century. The island was originally two separate rocky outcrops known as Great Mill Rock and Little Mill Rock, named for a tidal mill built on one of them in the early 1700s.
