Pioneer (schooner)

The schooner Pioneer is a rare survivor from the nineteenth century that challenges the typical image of maritime history. While nearly every other cargo ship of her era was crafted from timber, the Pioneer was built with a wrought iron hull in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, in eighteen eighty five. She remains the only American merchant sailing vessel with an iron hull still in existence today. This construction choice was not just a stylistic preference; it reflected her origins in a region that served as the nation's center for iron shipbuilding, where she was initially commissioned to haul heavy loads of sand along the Delaware River.
