Adelaide L. T. Douglas House

The Adelaide L. T. Douglas House at fifty-seven Park Avenue stands as a quiet relic of the Gilded Age. Built between nineteen hundred and nine and nineteen hundred and eleven, this six-story townhouse was designed by the celebrated Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer. He crafted the residence in the French Classic style of Louis the Sixteenth, featuring a facade of granite and limestone that remains remarkably intact today. While the structure serves as the permanent mission of Guatemala to the United Nations, its original purpose was to be a private home for Adelaide Townsend Douglas, a prominent New York socialite who moved here during a time when Park Avenue was transitioning from a chaotic construction zone into an elite residential boulevard.
