Center for Book Arts

The Center for Book Arts was established in nineteen seventy-four as the first nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated to the book as an art object. Founder Richard Minsky envisioned a space where the traditional craft of bookbinding would not simply be preserved in an academic vacuum but actively practiced by contemporary artists. By providing a public studio filled with printing presses and professional equipment, the center created a bridge between ancient techniques and modern creative expression. It serves as the original model for similar institutions across the country that champion the book as a tactile, sculptural medium.
