Princess Theatre (New York, 29th Street)

The Princess Theatre near the intersection of 29th Street and Broadway was an early center for minstrel shows and vaudeville in the late nineteenth century. Originally built in 1875, it operated under a variety of names, including the Jonah Theatre, a title chosen to playfully mock the building's supposed indestructibility. By 1902, the Shubert brothers leased the site and christened it the Princess Theatre, though it functioned in that capacity for only a few years before being converted into retail space in 1907. Today, the location is occupied by an apartment building, leaving behind its days as a destination for city audiences seeking variety entertainment.
