You are approaching the Church of the Transfiguration, a place famously known as the Little Church Around the Corner. Its nickname emerged from an act of social defiance in eighteen seventy when a prominent rector at another parish refused to bury a deceased actor named George Holland because of his profession. When the actor Joseph Jefferson asked if any clergy would perform the service, the dismissive priest suggested there was a little church around the corner that handled such people. Jefferson replied with a blessing for that very place, and the name stuck, forever tethering the church to the city's theatrical history.
