Gramercy Theatre

The Gramercy Theatre was designed by architect Charles Sandblom and opened in nineteen thirty-seven as the Gramercy Park Theatre. It features the Streamline Moderne style, an evolution of Art Deco architecture that emphasizes aerodynamic curves and long, horizontal lines meant to evoke the speed and motion of the machine age. The theater was originally given the name Gramercy Park Theatre to distinguish it from another, now-vanished venue called the Gramercy Theatre that stood on First Avenue. Once that original competitor shuttered in the nineteen fifties, the theater dropped the word Park from its title.
