This specific spot, known as the Gansevoort Woodland, serves as the park's gateway. Unlike the structured, linear paths that characterize the rest of the High Line, this area features a dense, layered thicket of native trees and shrubs. These plantings were chosen to evoke the wild, unkempt beauty of the landscape that naturally colonized the structure after the freight trains stopped running in 1980. This lush, overgrown aesthetic honors the decades when this rusted iron viaduct sat abandoned, slowly being reclaimed by nature while the rest of the city below continued to change.
