Lena Horne Theatre

The Lena Horne Theatre occupies a unique place in Broadway history as the first venue in the district to be named in honor of a Black woman. This designation occurred in November 2022, serving as a tribute to the legendary singer, actress, and civil rights icon who had a long, meaningful association with the Nederlander family, who operate the theater today. Before this change, the building spent over sixty years known as the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, named for the influential New York Times critic. That earlier name itself marked a historic first, as it was the first time a legitimate Broadway house had ever been dedicated to a theater critic.
