You are approaching the site of Area, a legendary nightclub that occupied this building at 157 Hudson Street between 1983 and 1987. The venue was never intended to be a permanent institution, but rather an ephemeral art project housed inside a cavernous former industrial warehouse. Its founders rejected the idea of a static nightclub, choosing instead to tear down and rebuild the entire interior every six weeks to match a new, immersive theme. These massive overhauls transformed the space into everything from a suburban neighborhood complete with house facades to a science fiction landscape filled with experimental art installations.
