Canal Park

Canal Park stands as a small triangular oasis in Tribeca, but its current peace hides a century of chaos. This site was once the location of the Clinton Country Market, a bustling hub for farmers and artisans in the nineteenth century. By the twentieth century, however, the area was dismantled and paved over to serve as a staging ground for the massive Holland Tunnel project. For decades, the space held nothing but tunnel ventilation pumps and city sanitation trucks, completely obscured from its original purpose as a public square.
