The Bean Sculpture

You are looking at a forty-ton stainless steel sculpture that appears to be precariously wedged beneath the base of the fifty-six Leonard Street skyscraper. Because the building above it features dramatic, cantilevered floor plates that resemble a stack of teetering woodblocks, the high-rise is locally known as the Jenga Tower. The sculpture was designed by the British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor to create the visual illusion that the weight of the massive residential building is literally squashing the metal form against the sidewalk.
