Christopher Park

Christopher Park serves as the small, quiet heart of the Stonewall National Monument. The park was established in eighteen thirty-seven, years after a devastating fire destroyed the tenements that once stood on this triangular patch of land. Local residents petitioned the city to convert the site into an open space to prevent further overcrowding in the neighborhood. Though it sits directly across from the site of a pivotal uprising, the park has been a neighborhood anchor long before it became a landmark for civil rights.
