Statue of Philip Sheridan (New York City)

The bronze statue standing in Christopher Park honors General Philip Henry Sheridan, a pivotal Union commander during the American Civil War. Sculpted by Italian-born artist Joseph Pollia and dedicated in 1936, the monument depicts the general in full military regalia. It was financed through a public subscription campaign that raised six thousand dollars, a sum that took twelve years to gather due to the economic constraints of the Great Depression. The unveiling date of October 19 was specifically chosen to mark the seventy-second anniversary of Sheridan's famous victory at the Battle of Cedar Creek. Tucked into the base of the granite plinth is a time capsule containing the names of those who contributed to the memorial's creation.
