Pelican Beach at Main Beach is marked by a sweeping, uninterrupted stretch of white sand that curves toward the Nerang River mouth. Before the nineteen eighties, this was a quiet, narrow strip of beach often ignored by tourists. That changed when a massive sand-pumping project reshaped the coastline to fight erosion. Engineers pushed sand from offshore to widen the beach, and the local pelican population quickly claimed the new shallows as their primary feeding ground, earning the place its name.
