The Kinkabool Apartments rise as a stark white, nine-story block of concrete against the Gold Coast skyline. When it opened in nineteen thirty-five, it stood as the first high-rise residential building in Surfers Paradise. Before the construction of Kinkabool, the area consisted mostly of low-slung wooden beach houses. The developer, Eric Johnson, chose the name from a combination of king and kabool, a local Aboriginal word for carpet snake. It changed the character of the coastline forever.
