The Espace Julien is marked by its brightly painted, graffiti-covered exterior walls that stand out against the neighborhood’s older stone facades. This concert venue opened in nineteen eighty-eight inside what was once a series of warehouses and a public market hall. While the city planned to demolish the site for a parking garage, local artists and musicians campaigned to save the structure. They turned the space into a permanent stage for rock, reggae, and hip-hop acts that were struggling to find venues.
