The Place de Lenche sits on a steep slope above the Old Port, identified by the stone terrace that opens wide toward the sea. Beneath this flat ground lies the foundation of the ancient Greek agora, where the city’s first citizens gathered two thousand years ago. In the nineteenth century, the square housed a theater where actors performed plays in the local Provençal dialect. During the long summer evenings, residents spilled out from these cafes to watch ships sail into the harbor below.
