Hôtel de Cabre

The Hôtel de Cabre features a distinct corner turret that hangs over the intersection without touching the ground. Built in fifteen thirty-five for Louis de Cabre, a wealthy merchant and consul of Marseille, this house remains the oldest private residence in the city. During the German occupation in nineteen forty-three, the historic center was largely destroyed, but engineers lifted this entire stone facade on metal beams and rotated it ninety degrees to shield the building from the encroaching demolition.
