The Monument aux Morts of the Army of the Orient stands as a massive concrete arch facing the Mediterranean Sea, inscribed with the names of soldiers who fell in the Balkans and the Levant during the First World War. Architect Gaston Castel designed the structure, featuring a central passage that frames the horizon. When the memorial opened in nineteen twenty-seven, it served as a site for mourning the troops who died far from French soil. The names of battles appear carved into its heavy stone facade.
