Place Sainte Marthe is a small, quiet enclave made of red brick buildings. It was built between eighteen ninety-five and nineteen twelve to house the city's growing working class, specifically laborers who worked in the nearby canal warehouses. The architect, Charles Breffendille, designed these structures with narrow alleyways and cramped interiors, aiming to maximize density on a tight plot of land. Today, it remains a self-contained pocket of the tenth arrondissement, separate from the main boulevards and the heavy traffic of Paris.
