The terrace of the Parc de Belleville offers a panoramic view across Paris, dominated by a steep, landscaped slope that rises above the neighborhood. This hill sits on a foundation of gypsum, which laborers spent centuries mining to create the plaster used in millions of Parisian walls. Beneath the park lies a labyrinth of hollowed-out galleries from those old quarries. When city engineers finally stabilized the ground in the nineteen eighties, they transformed the scarred landscape into these cascading gardens and winding paths.
