27 rue de Fleurus

The heavy wooden door at twenty-seven rue de Fleurus hides a small pavilion that served as the primary gathering place for the avant-garde in the early twentieth century. Gertrude Stein and her brother Leo moved here in nineteen oh three, filling the high-ceilinged atelier with paintings by Picasso, Matisse, and Cézanne long before the rest of the world caught on. Guests crowded onto the small chairs each Saturday evening to argue about art while Stein sat in her armchair writing.
