Fontaine Saint-Sulpice

The Fontaine Saint-Sulpice features four distinct sides, each topped by a larger-than-life stone statue of a bishop. These figures look down from their pedestals, representing the four greatest Catholic preachers of the reign of Louis Philippe. Locals once jokingly called this the fountain of the four cardinals because none of the men depicted had actually been appointed to that rank. It stands as a heavy, square monument in the center of the square, built in eighteen forty-four by the architect Louis Visconti.
