Jardin du Luxembourg

The Jardin du Luxembourg features a heavy iron fence topped with gold-tipped spears surrounding acres of clipped chestnut trees and gravel paths. Marie de' Medici commissioned these grounds in sixteen twelve to recreate the Italian gardens of her youth in Florence. She wanted a home that reminded her of the Pitti Palace. Years later, during the French Revolution, the palace became a prison for political captives who spent their final days watching the garden from behind those same iron bars.
