Place Saint-Sulpice

The twin towers of Saint-Sulpice loom over the square, mismatched in height and style because construction stalled for over a century. Jean-Baptiste Oudry, the famous painter, once kept his pet crocodile in the abbey garden here. It supposedly escaped and wandered the streets until a frightened neighbor finally cornered and killed the beast. People still stop to argue about the uneven facade, but the memory of that crocodile lingering in the shadows of these stone walls remains the true ghost of the square.
