Saint-Sulpice Fountain

The Saint-Sulpice Fountain stands at the center of the square, defined by its four distinct lions carved from white stone. Each lion sits at a corner, guarding a niche that holds the statue of a prominent French preacher from the seventeenth century. Louis Visconti designed this monument in eighteen forty-four. He chose four bishops who never managed to become cardinals, a detail that earned the fountain the nickname, The Fountain of the Four Bishops, among locals who found the exclusion amusing.
