The Square de l’Opéra-Louis Jouvet sits tucked away behind the Opéra Garnier, defined by the bronze statue of a man holding a mask. This is Louis Jouvet, the legendary actor and director who spent years performing at the nearby Théâtre de l'Athénée. During the German occupation of Paris, Jouvet famously refused to tour in Germany, choosing instead to lead his troupe on a long, arduous tour through Latin America to keep the spirit of French theater alive while his home stage remained dark.
