It gained fame during the nineteenth century as the city's premier destination for oysters, which were so popular that Parisians consumed millions of them annually at the time. The restaurant became a legendary haunt for the literary elite, particularly Honoré de Balzac, who frequently featured the establishment in his monumental work, La Comédie Humaine.
