Place Paul Verlaine is a small, quiet square anchored by a heavy, square brick water tower that looms over the neighborhood. The tower dates back to nineteen hundred and two and remains a functioning part of the city water system. When the tower was first proposed, residents fought the project fiercely, worried that such a massive structure would destroy the village character of this hilltop. They lost that fight, but the tower eventually blended into the neighborhood, becoming an unlikely local landmark instead.
